with the first-ever son lux show still closer than it appears in my mirror, here are some deep thoughts.
wow. felt like giving birth on stage. none of the songs had ever been spotted in public before, and it was a very intimate, very painful, very surprising, very rewarding, crazy experience. i had never done anything like that before, really. i've always been the little dude getting jiggy in the back on some crazy old FM synth, making faces and kicking my feet up in the air during the more-than-occasional outlandish funk romp. there's more where that came from, but hopefully they'll be more son lux as well.
THANK YOU
i have a lot of gratitude for the people at clavin college who put on this great event and dreamt up a way to provide an opportunity for someone like me. bravo, and THANK YOU to kirstin, rob, ken, andy, and all the others who broke a sweat making the Festival of Faith & Music an amazing event. also thank you to all the folks who've contacted me with their warm thoughts and responses to the show and recordings. positive feedback and constructive criticism are both welcome!
and a special THANK YOU to michael weeks on perc & vox, and matt derubertis on bass, for rescuing me. i could not have pulled it off without you guys! and THANK YOU to joshue ott, qian li, and mike jones for the beautiful video contributions which brought it all to a new level!
wuh? 600 plays by mid-day?!? um, hello everybody. - r

Dude! Awesome! I wanna see some more pics of you rocking the place down. How were you received? Feedback? C'mon, man, give me the freaking dish! Glad it went well and can't wait to see more of the videos. BTW, I've got a nasty open wound on my arm right now...you want in?

freakin awesome.
when does the Lott come to Dallas?
Ryan, great stuff at the conference. I thoroughly enjoyed your performance. What was the name of the song that featured what sounded like air raid sirens? I definitely need to hear that again.
andy, thanks for the kind note. you're either thinking of "Chapter 11," which employed an ambient texture of a train passing back and forth slowly, and tuned in such a way that it hummed in resonance with the music. (in a stereo PA that would have been really sweet. as it was, in the round, everything was mono. the idea was a train coming and going across your field of vision (hearing). trains also came in and out of other songs... "...or will you stay...")
or, you're thinking of "Chapter 6," in which the bass player (matt) pressed a bunch of fun pedals, in conjunction with harmonics, to wail out high notes. maybe that's the one. he came up with that in the hotel rehearsal the day of. ha. do what you need to do.
of course, neither of these elements are in the album versions... speaking of which, did you ever get a copy of the album from rob? i can post one to you if you'd like.
"Do" is my absolute favorite! It sounded great at Calvin! I was there! :)

p.s. Andy, I loved the one song with the air raid siren, or train or whatever it was...very eerie.
Ryan, do you know when your cd will be out? Please keep me informed, if you will.

Your performance at Calvin was inspiring in the best sense of the word. I was encouraged by the risks you took in performing these songs (and I had come to the conference hoping, like the Cowardly Lion, for some courage). My spirit was nourished by your lush music and your passionate performance. I am grateful for having seen you play.
